Are you missing a trick?

Published by Neil O'Connor - Fleet Recruitment's Managing Director

Sales and business development staff are the lifeblood of any business and sometimes the only people that bring in the vital cash flow required to grow, invest and survive.  Choosing the right people to take your product or service to market is one of the most important decisions you make in business.

With over 20 years sales and sales management experience, I recognise the attributes of a great sales person – Honesty, passion, devotion, hunger, discipline, tenaciousness, strategic thinking and a likeable personality.

Often employers only want salespeople who have sold in their specific market or industry and I understand the temptation, they might generate quick wins, but in doing so some very talented people can be discarded in the initial sift.

B2B sales and business relationships are generated by a process of following disciplines and it’s a skill that can be transferred to many industries.  You can impart product knowledge, but what you can’t impart is the personality, get up and go and spark needed to be a great salesperson, so don’t be afraid to look at people from outside your industry.
